In April of 2003
I joined some fellow archaeologists on a Phase III excavation in Florida near Pensacola. This was my second visit to Florida, although my first was over twenty years ago and those memories are pretty much "left" to photos. While there, I enjoyed the warm beaches, museums, local sights, and some of the nightlife.
Santa Rosa County, the area in which we were mostly staying has quite a history. It was named so for Santa Rosa Veterbo, patron saint of a Catholic Church near Rome, Italy. Milton, which is about 20 miles from the shore, was the heart of the county in 1825, when it was established as a trading post on the Blackwater River. "Old Ironsides," the famed naval ship, was built in nearby Bagdad, which was one of the largest lumber mill and shipbuilding towns in the South. The county is now known as the "Canoeing Capitol of Florida".
